DEBATE SESSION 2—TUESDAY 13.09.2016
Art and Nature: Ceramics in Modernist Architecture
Modernism was the first art movement with international influence but was especially prominent in Europe, where it originated and where its greatest works are concentrated. In this context, Barcelona and Catalonia stand out as one of the places where examples are most splendid and expressed in the works of such great architects such as Antoni Gaudí, Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Josep Puig i Cadafalch, although many more could be mentioned as well.
One of the key elements that distinguish Modernism in relation to other architectural movements is the constant presence of the applied arts, which represented a great resurgence of artisan trades. Wrought iron, stained glass windows with leaded glass, and ceramics (in both construction and decorative aspects) reached levels of excellence never before seen.
Today, these works are the subject of study by art historians and also the object of major restoration work to return them to their original splendor, a process that employs numerous ceramists. Indeed, there is one case, Antoni Gaudí’s Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, which is still under construction and employs some of Catalonia’s finest artisans.
It is our desire that the congress meeting will provide a means for international experts to take part in a round-table discussion and for various speakers to present papers on this subject.
